New River Canoeing
 Fishing
isn’t the only thing to do on the New
River. Rafting and canoeing down the New
River are favorite pastimes for many
locals and a great way to escape the
warmer temperatures in the summer. The
New River is an American Heritage River
and one of the oldest rivers in the
world. The ancient waters are mostly
mild flowing in the part of the river
that flows through Ashe County, and
visitors and residents of Ashe County
enjoy New River Canoeing and float trips
in the warmer months.
The South Fork of the New River is a
perfect spot to put in and is near Todd,
NC. There are several raft guides and
shops located throughout the county and
along the New River that offer float
trips and equipment rentals for those
who want to enjoy the river. We have
